December 2018 Book: Educated—A Memoir
Our December 2018 book selection is Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover. "Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home."

November 2018 Book: Calypso
Our November book selection is Calypso by David Sedaris. "With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny--it's a book that can make you laugh 'til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris's powers of observation have never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future."

October 2018 Book: City of Ghosts
Our October/November book selection is City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab. "Ever since Cass almost drowned (okay, she did drown, but she doesn't like to think about it), she can pull back the Veil that separates the living from the dead . . . and enter the world of spirits. Her best friend is even a ghost. So things are already pretty strange. But they're about to get much stranger."
In-person Meet Up at 6:30 p.m. November 5, 2018 at Enso Urban Winery in SE Portland. (I'll be there drinking wine and enjoying a cheese board. You are more than welcome to too and we can talk books!) Or join the online discussion forum by clicking the image below.
